UK Christian Group Supports New Bill That Will Change Abortion Laws

A Christian charity in the UK lauded a new bill that will ban abortion due to minor disabilities.

Christian Action Research and Education (CARE), a social policy charity based in London, praised the members of Parliament (MPs) who push for the bill which would prevent abortions up to birth of babies with abnormalities such as club foot, cleft lip or palate, reports Premier Christian News.

CARE explained that people misinterpret the current abortion laws which allow for abortion up to birth in cases of ‘serious disability.’

This new bill rightly aims to address this obvious discrimination and bring clarity to the current laws. —CARE spokesman James Mildred

“Tragically, this has been interpreted to include treatable conditions like a clubfoot and cleft lip or palate,” said CARE spokesman James Mildred. “This new bill rightly aims to address this obvious discrimination and bring clarity to the current laws.”

Mildred added that, “Since the 1990 change, societal attitudes towards those with disabilities have significantly improved and this is reflected in legislation like the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act.”

The bill is supported by 12 MPs from the three largest parties in the UK. It will clarify that minor disabilities—cleft palate, cleft lip, cleft palate and lip, and club foot, are not grounds for abortion.

Christian Conservative MP Fiona Bruce leads this change. Her son was born with a club foot which was corrected by surgery and physiotherapy, reports The Sun.

MP Bruce said her son’s condition didn’t hinder him from living his life to the fullest. “It has given him a depth of understanding about the value of every human life.”

She stressed that, “This is a sensible law change that I am inviting all MPs, regardless of where they stand on the wider issue of abortion, to get behind and support.”
