California Wildfires: How You Can Help

Firefighters continue to gain ground on California’s wildfires, driven by extreme blazes in August and September. According to Cal Fire, Over 14,800 firefighters remain on the line of 28 major wildfires burning across California with almost 2.2 million acres burned so far.

The fires have killed at least eight people and destroyed upwards of 3,300 structures, Cal Fire said. Most of the state remains under Red Flag Warning as strong winds and low humidity continue, exacerbating ongoing flames.

As of Thursday morning, 102 large fires have burned 4.4 million acres in 12 states, including California, Oregon and Washington, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

There are 96 large fires in the western US. More than 3.4 million acres have burned so far, with tens of thousands of acres burned in California, Oregon and Washington, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

In California alone, 2,478,443 acres have burned. That’s about twice the size of the Grand Canyon.

Prayer

Scripture tells us there is much power in the prayers of the righteous (James 5:16 ). Let us lift our prayers for all those who run toward danger for the sake of others and for those who strengthen them, their families, and loved ones during this stressful time in our nation and the world.

“For I, the LORD your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, Fear not, I am the one who helps you.” Isaiah 41:13

God Almighty, give courage to the firefighters and first responders who continue to do this important work they are called to do, looking beyond the risk for the sake of those in need. Put your mighty angels and a hedge of protection around them and comfort their hearts when they are weary and brokenhearted.

Lord, we also lift our prayers of thanksgiving and comfort for the families of first responders and all who support them. Surround them with your loving presence and give them peace and courage. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
